A stem sentence describes the representation and helps the students move to working in the abstract (“ten tenths is equivalent to one whole”) and could be seen as a representation in itself.

In the work group we considered different uses of stem sentences:
eg For repeated addition we can calculate by using multiplication
For emphasis on the correct language
eg Addend plus addend equals sum
