A stem sentence describes the representation and helps the students move to working in the abstract (“ten tenths is equivalent to one whole”) and could be seen as a representation in itself.

Stem sentences: As part of a work group, a group of subject leaders from schools collated some examples of stem sentences. 

 

In the work group we considered different uses of stem sentences:

  • For generalisations   

eg For repeated addition we can calculate by using multiplication

 

  • For emphasis on the correct language

eg Addend plus addend equals sum

  • To establish structures
